Dean Frank met with Jennifer Cawsey, Senior Publishers Representative from Worth Publishers on March 3, to acknowledge their generous donation to the Secondary Teacher Education Program in the Dadaab Refugee Camp, Kenya. Their contribution included 200 copies of the book, The Development of Children, by Cynthia Lightfoot, Michael Cole, and Sheila Cole.

Education Research and Teacher Practice: Inspiring Educators Series

Dean Frank attended a lively discussion panel on March 13, sponsored by the Office of the Graduate Programs and Research (OGPR) as part of the Year of Teacher Education, where current incumbents of our Faculty Chairs and Professorships shared how their research is informing current teacher education practices in BC and beyond.

The panelists were Dr. Jan Hare, Professorship in Indigenous Education for Teacher Education; Dr. Lynn Miller, Myrne B. Nevison Professorship in Counselling Psychology; Dr. Nancy Perry, Professorship in Struggling Youth; Dr. Jordan Tinney, Superintendent of Schools/CEO of Surrey School District.

Tri-Nations Conference 2014

Dean Frank was honoured to host and give the opening address at this year’s Tri-Nations Conference on March 29 – 30 at UBC’s Faculty of Education, where Internationalization in Education: Its Nature, Challenges and Possibilities in an Increasingly Globalized World, was critically examined by the following keynote speakers: Drs. Kris Magnusson, Shafik Dharam, Wang Fang, William Pinar, Muhau Wang and Huapeng Dai.

SNDT (Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey) Women’s University’s Visit to UBC

The Dean and Dr. Tom Sork were pleased to meet with senior leadership from SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai, India on April 14, to discuss the development of a collaborative online Master’s program.

SNDT delegation consisted of Dr. Vasudha Kamat (Vice-Chancellor), Dr. Vandana Chakrabarti (Pro Vice-Chancellor), and Dr. Madhura Kesarkar (Director, Board of College and University Development).

Afternoon Tea with the Dean

Hosted by the Dean at the First Nations Longhouse on May 12, this event saw a great turnout of faculty and staff who joined the Dean for snacks, refreshments, and social mingle.

The highlight of the event included the announcement of 2013 – 2014 Faculty of Education Staff Award, which was awarded to Kirsty Robbins at the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy.

OGPR Research Week

Sponsored by the Office of the Graduate Programs and Research in collaboration with the Graduate Student Council of the Faculty of Education, and the Teacher Education Office, this year’s Research Week, held from May 13 – 15, focused on Research in Teacher Education. The Dean attended the Canada Research Chairs panel and congratulated the 2013 – 2014 Tri-Council Scholarship recipients of the Faculty of Education.

Education Congregation

The Dean extends his congratulations and best wishes to the graduating class of 2014. The graduation ceremony held on May 22 was well attended by both faculty members and graduating students in Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Education, and Kinesiology.

Drs. Hartej Gill and Marina Milner-Bolotin were the recipients of Killam Teaching Prize.

Update on the Faculty Searches

The Dean is currently the chair of the Advisory Committee for the search of the next Head in the Departments of Educational Studies (EDST), Educational & Counselling Psychology, & Special Education (ECPS), and the School of Kinesiology (KIN).

Dean Frank is pleased to announce the confirmation of the appointment by the Provost of the next Head of the Department of Language and Literacy (LLED). Please join him in welcoming Dr. Anthony Paré as he begins his five-year term on July 1, 2014.

Updates on the Dean’s committees within UBC

    1. Committee of Deans Meeting
      The Draft for UBC’s 20-year Sustainability Strategy plan was reviewed.
      Proposed future Academic Directions for the UBC Learning Exchange were discussed.
       
    2. Senate Committee Meetings: Teaching and Learning Committee Meetings
      A Draft proposal for Ad Hoc Committee of Senate for Flexible Learning was discussed for approval.
      A proposal on Graduate Student Learning on how to improve the quality of graduate student learning across the entire university was reviewed.
       
    3. Task Force on Gender-Based Violence and Aboriginal Stereotypes
      Dr. Frank is a member of this Task Force, which created a preliminary list of recommendations back in February 2014 and invited the UBC Community to express their opinions regarding it. The AMS Executive, the Aboriginal Students’ Commissioner, the Equity Commissioner, and the AMS Education Committee have provided their feedback regarding these recommendations.

Big Block Dinner and Hall of Fame Banquet

The Dean attended this year’s annual Big Block Dinner and Hall of Fame Banquet, which was held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on April 1. The Big Block Dinner, which celebrates the best that UBC Athletics has to offer, was
combined with the UBC Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 2002.

An Intimate Evening in Support of CampOUT

Hosted by Heidi and Richard Coglon on May 13 at their residence, this major fundraiser marked its fifth annual event and celebrated the partnership between Alumni UBC and Access & Diversity for continuing to be a unique and empowering leadership experience for queer, trans, and allied youth in the province of BC.

Dean Frank was one of the speakers at this event, along with Louise Cowan, Vice President, Students; Amber Dawn, Author; and Kailer Belliveau-Townend, Past Camper and Cabin Leader.

  1. Calgary
    This alumni reception took place on March 8 at the Glenbow Museum for a social mingle and a tour of the exhibit Worn to be Wilde: The Black Leather Jacket.

    This event was hosted at the Coast Capri Hotel in Kelowna on March 13.

  4. Gordon Smith Gallery
    Held on April 9 at the Gordon Smith Gallery in North Vancouver, this event drew a large crowd of alumni and provided the guests with an opportunity to meet with Dr. Gordon Smith. The Dean invited the alumni to share their ideas about the Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons and how the space could be relevant to them. The process was illustrated in real time by Sam Bradd (UBC MEd candidate), and was recorded by the event videographer.

Donor Appreciation Spring Tea

This year’s annual donor appreciation event was held on March 11, where the attendees received a guided tour of the Museum of Anthropology, followed by a social mingle and afternoon tea at the SAGE Bistro.

American Educational Research Association (AERA), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

As part of this year’s annual AERA conference on April 3 – 5 in Philadelphia, Dean Frank attended the U21 Deans of Education meeting on Character Education, followed by a symposium on Clinical Approaches to Teacher Education. The Dean also hosted a UBC Reception, where he presented the highlights of the year.

Trip to Africa

The Dean accompanied a number of our faculty members, including Drs. Tom Sork, Rita Irwin, Samson Nashon, Cynthia Nichol, and Karen Meyer, on a trip to the Dadaab refugee camp in northeastern Kenya from April 18 – May 4. The UBC Faculty of Education has been working with Kenya’s Moi University since 2009 to develop and implement a teacher education program for secondary school teachers in the Dadaab settlement. Supported by a grant from the Government of Canada through York University’s Borderless Higher Education for Refugees (BHER) project, the first group of students will begin this program in August 2014.

Dean Frank and Dr. Tom Sork continued on to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They visited CODE-Ethiopia (an affiliate of the Canadian Organization for Development through Education), which promotes literacy through the development of community libraries and the publication of books in Indigenous languages (of which there are more than 80 in Ethiopia). They were also invited by Dean Tirussew Teferra of the College of Education and Behavioural Studies at Addis Ababa University (AAU) to make a presentation about the Faculty of Education focusing on our programs to prepare teachers to work in rural and Indigenous communities. They also had the pleasure to meet and have tea with Professor Darge Wole of AAU who received his master’s degree from UBC.

The final stop for the Dean and Dr. Sork was the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town, South Africa, where they met with university officials, the Dean of Education, and colleagues affiliated with our unique online Master of Education in Adult Learning and Global Change, an international partnership involving UWC, UBC and universities in Sweden and Australia.

Teacher Education Roundtable Conference, UNBC, Prince George, BC

Dr. Frank attended the Teacher Education Roundtable Conference at the University of Northern BC on May 9, where lively discussions took place with panel members Brian Pepper, SD57 Superintendent, on School District University Partnership and the New Teacher Mentoring Program; Deborah Koehn, Faculty at UNBC, on New Curriculum/Leadership in Education; Lisa Kishkan, President QDTA – SD28, on challenges in the Education System.

Man-Up Against Suicide Photo Exhibition

Held at the Foster Eastman Gallery, this exhibition featured photographs taken by 25 people who have direct experience with a suicide attempt or contemplation. Also featured are the perspectives of men and women who have lost a man to suicide. Led by UBC Professor John Oliffe, this exhibit is one of five projects conducted within the Men’s Depression & Suicide Network, funded by Movember Canada.

Updates on the Dean’s committees beyond UBC

  1. Advisory Group on Provincial Assessment (AGPA)
    The AGPA, consisting of Dean Frank, Kris Magnusson, Valerie Adrian, Kadriye Ercikan, Starleigh Grass, Wendy Harris, Janice Chow, Teri Mooring, Jim Iker, Glen Hansman, Ellen Ellis, and Janice Neden, met on March 20 at the SFU Harbour Centre.
     
  2. BCDE Meeting
    As the Treasurer of Association of BC Deans of Education (ABCDE), Dean Frank regularly meets with the other BC Deans. Some of the most recent meetings were held at the Teacher Education Roundtable Conference in Prince George on May 9, and at the SFU Harbour Centre on April 11.
     
  3. ACDE Meeting at Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE)
    As the President of Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE), Dean Frank attended this year’s ACDE meeting on May 26 – 28 at Brock University in St. Catherine’s, ON.
     
  4. WADE Meeting at CSSE
    The members of the Western Association of Deans of Education (WADE) had a chance to meet and connect while at the CSSE on May 27.

Review of the role of the Associate Dean, Graduate Programs and Research

Online Survey for Graduate Students, Staff and Faculty

Dean Frank has extended the appointment of Dr. Beth Haverkamp, Associate Dean – Graduate Programs and Research (AD, OGPR) to June 2016. Within the context of the Faculty of Education Strategic Plan, and UBC’s Place and Promise, Dean Frank has initiated a review of the role of the Associate Dean in order to identify the priorities for leadership in Graduate Programs and Research in the coming two years, and in anticipation of future needs. To be specific, this is not a review of Dr. Haverkamp, but rather, a review of the role of the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and Research.

The Advisory Committee representing students, staff, and faculty is conducting a multi-source input process including this online survey. Graduate students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to participate. Your input will form a valuable part of the deliberations of the Advisory Committee, to assist with recommendations of priorities for the Associate Dean.

Polish Ambassador’s Visit

The Faculty of Education hosted a visit from the Ambassador and the Consul General of the Republic of Poland on Dec. 2, 2013. The respected visitors were greeted by Dean Frank to view the bronze relief by the Polish artist Mark Rona, commemorating Janusz Korczak.

Year of Teacher Education Event: Out in Schools & Erase

On Dec. 10, 2013, Dr. Frank attended a Year of Teacher Education event, sponsored by UBC’s Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice. The event consisted of presentations focusing on Out in Schools and the BC Ministry of Education’s program against bullying ERASE. Out in Schools harnesses the power of film to engage BC high school students in discussions around bullying, homophobia and difference.

NITEP Gathering & Book Launch

On Dec. 13, 2013, Dean Frank attended a NITEP Alumni & Friends Reception at the Westin Bayshore, which featured a book launch for Dr. Verna Kirkness, a former NITEP Director. This gathering was held during the annual Aboriginal Education Conference organized by the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) and the Ministry of Education.

External Advisory Board to the Dean

The first meeting of the newly constituted External Advisory Board to the Dean was hosted on the evening of Jan. 16, 2014 at Sage Bistro, on the UBC campus.

A Dialogue with Jan Hare, Professor in Indigenous Education for Teacher Education

On Feb. 4, 2014, the Dean attended Dr. Jan Hare’s Professorship lecture at the First Nations House of Learning (Sty-Wet-Tan Hall), where members of the community were invited to dialogue about the vision and plans for the Professorship in Indigenous Education for Teacher Education and the needs of the community. Dr. Hare’s appointment to this Professorship was the outcome of the legacy project from the Year of Indigenous Education.

Tea with the Dean

On the morning of Feb. 5, 2014 the Dean hosted an informal gathering and break in the Staff Lounge for all Faculty and Staff across different departments and units. The event had a great turn out and provided an opportunity for members of the Education Community to interact and socialize over refreshments and snacks.

Update on Faculty Searches

The Dean is currently the chair of the Advisory Committees for the search of the next Head in the Departments of Educational Studies (EDST), Language and Literacy (LLED) and the Directorship search for the School of Kinesiology.

The Headship searches for the departments of EDST and LLED are well underway and candidates have been identified for the interview stage. All short-listed candidates are invited for a 2 day visit throughout March and early April and will meet with a range of stakeholders including staff and students. Each candidate will present their scholarship and their vision to lead the department forward as Head at a public presentation that all members of the Faculty are welcome to attend.

University Dialogues

The Dean attended a University Dialogue on Dec. 10, 2013 as one of 23 UBC contributors to ‘Community and Patient Voices in Health Professional Education‘, a 3-year project funded by the Vancouver Foundation.
 

Update on the Dean’s Committees within UBC

The Dean represents the Faculty of Education, by serving as a member on the following Committees at UBC:

  • UBC Faculty Association Joint Consultation Committee (JCC)
  • Task Force on Intersectional Gender-Based Violence and Aboriginal Stereotypes. Preliminary recommendations to guide future directions in changing the campus culture were put forth by the Task Force and the UBC community was invited to provide their feedback.
  • UBC Vancouver Senate.
  • Senate Teaching & Learning Committee.
  • Senate Curriculum Committee.
  • Search Committee for Vice-Provost and Associate Vice President Academic Affairs. Dr. Anna Kindler, Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, will be finishing her term on June 30, 2014 as the Vice Provost and Associate Vice President Academic.

Dean Frank completed his term on the following Committees:

  • Task Force on Mistreatment in the Learning Environment. In September 2013, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine invited Dr. Frank to chair this Task Force, as related to the medical education program in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. The Task Force reviewed the data and provided a report with recommendations at the end of December, 2013.
  • The President’s Advisory Committee, where recommendations were made to the Board of Governors for re-appointing Mr. Pierre Ouillet as the Vice-President, Finance, Resources and Operations for a five-year term starting Jan. 1, 2014.

 

Trip to University of Antioquia, Colombia

In January 2014, the Dean and Dr. Gerald Fallon travelled to University of Antioquia in Colombia to explore and assess the development of a Community-University Engagement Research Project, spearheaded by Dr. Fallon (UBC) and Dr. Sierra (University of Antioquia). The project aims to explore alternatives to conventional ways universities interact with communities, by developing sustainable educational policies and practices from Indigenous, Afro-Colombian and Campesinos perspectives.

This initiative is a partnership between the faculties of education of two major Canadian and Colombian Universities (UBC and University of Antioquia), two regional Colombian universities (UTCH: Universidad Tecnológica de Chocó & FUCLA: Fundación Universitaria Claretiana), three Colombian Indigenous, Afro-descendants and Campesino (Mestizo peasants) community-based organizations operating in the provinces of Antioquia and Chocó (ASOCIACIÓN OREWA: Asociación de Cabildos Indígenas Embera, Wounaan, Katio, Chami y Tule; COCOMACIA: Consejo Comunitario Mayor de la Asociación Campesina Integral del Atrato; and CEAM: Corporación de Estudios, Educación e Investigación Ambiental) and two international non-governmental organizations (OXFAM and WWF) that support sustainability and human rights in diverse regions in Colombia.

Trip to Southeast Asia

In February 2014, the Dean travelled to Southeast Asia to visit Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand and met with Dr. Surachai Jewcharoensakul, Dean of Education. He also visited the Hanoi National University of Education in Vietnam, where he met with Dr. Nguyen Duc Son, Dean of Psychology and Education.

As the Treasurer of Association of BC Deans of Education (ABCDE), Dean Frank attended a meeting at the Quest University in Squamish on Feb. 7, 2014. Topics of discussion included a session on Issues Related to Block Transfers and TRB Certification, followed by another session on BC Education Plan and Implications for Teacher Education in BC.

Dr. Frank is a member of the Western Association of Deans of Education (WADE). This year’s annual meeting took place on Feb. 26 – 28, 2014 in Courtenay, BC, where the theme of discussion was Educational Transformation and Curriculum Reform: Implications for Faculties of Education.

The Dean is co-chairing a provincial advisory panel with SFU’s Dean of Education Kris Magnusson as part of the Ministry’s BC Education Plan. All of the advisory group’s discussion documents, work plans, and outcomes will be posted on the Ministry of Education website.

Dean Frank is the President of Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE). The association brings together deans, directors, and chairs of education in Canadian universities and university-colleges. For the latest news and updates, please refer to their website.

Book Launch

In October, the Dean attended the launch of Mona Gleason’s new book, Small Matters. “The first work of its kind, Small Matters explores how children faced death, endured illness, and learned to be healthy in the context of their families and communities.” – McGill-Queen’s University Press.

October 9 marked the launch of the Year of Teacher Education.

Celebrate Learning Week (October 20-26)

As part of UBC’s Celebrate Learning Week and the Year of Teacher Education, Dr. Frank welcomed parents, teachers, candidate teachers, writers, and librarians to the Celebrate Science 2013 – Making Science Fun event at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. The Dean also presented a special tribute to Gordon Gore, UBC Faculty of Education alumnus, science educator, and founder of the Big Little Science Centre in Kamloops.

United Way BBQ

The Dean joined a team of volunteers at the annual Faculty of Education sponsored event on November 13. This year’s BBQ was organized by PDCE (Professional Development & Community Engagement), and helped to raise funds to prevent child poverty, bullying, and senior isolation.

KIN Awards Night

Dean Frank was pleased to join students, staff, faculty, family, friends, and donors at the School of Kinesiology’s gala awards night November 25 at the First Nations Longhouse. This annual event recognizes KIN students who have been recipients of academic scholarships and prizes, and the generous donors and supporters of the School.

Bachelor of Education Student Awards Night

This special evening began with the Dean hosting an appreciation dinner for donors and the students whom they supported. Later, parents, family and friends joined them for a reception and ceremony to recognize the 2012/13 awards recipients.

96th AGM of the UBC Alumni Association

Dr. Frank participated in the meeting, which featured a discussion led by UBC President Stephen Toope along with three alumni who are bringing about positive change in the world. Among this group was Faculty of Education alumna Harpreet Dhillon, BEd’00, Dip(Ed)’06. Harpreet was awarded the 2013 UBC Faculty of Education Alumni Teacher Award.

Janusz Korczak Association of Canada, Holocaust Education Centre – Jewish Community Centre

Dean Frank spoke at the Association’s AGM about the Faculty of Education and Community Engagement. Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth (Ontario) Irwin Elman was keynote speaker.

Phi Delta Kappa Dinner

Dean Frank joined colleagues and alumni at The Arbutus Club, where they discussed aboriginal students’ success.

BC Assessment Forum

Dean Frank welcomed BC educators and other key stakeholders to the event, held in downtown Vancouver on October 4 and 5. Hosted by the Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology, & Special Education’s Measurement, Evaluation, and Research Methodology (MERM) program. Dr. Joan Herman gave the keynote, and a series of panel presentations and roundtable discussions were held, focusing on key issues in the future of educational assessments in British Columbia.

Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945 Exhibit and School Program

Dean Frank attended a Teacher’s Preview of the exhibit, which will be on display at the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre until December 4. This travelling exhibition from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum explores the imprisonment and deaths of thousands of homosexual males by the Third Reich. The school program promotes human rights and social responsibility through the lens of the exhibit.

Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE)

The Dean engaged the ACDE in a presentation on Borderless Higher Education for Refugees: The Dadaab Project. This UBC Faculty of Education initiative involves teams from Moi University (Kenya), Windle Trust-Kenya, and teachers in Dadaab refugee camps in the design of a two-year diploma program offering for refugee teachers.

Community Field Experience (CFE)

The Dean joined Dr. Wendy Carr, Director, Teacher Education Office, at a Community Partners Information Session held at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

BC Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association (BCPVPA)

Recently, Dr. Frank attended the Association’s annual conference, Connecting Leaders: Beyond Innovation and Change, held at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport in Richmond. Keynote speakers included Simon Breakspear, founder of Nextgen Learning, and George Couros, Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning for Parkland School Division.

Toronto Campaign Celebration 2013

In November, Dr. Frank joined UBC President Stephen Toope and over 150 UBC alumni and friends at The Carlu in Toronto to discuss the “Mysteries of the Brain.” UBC researchers Dr. Max Cynader, Dr. Peter Reiner, and Dr. Cheryl Wellington facilitated the discussion, which focused on traumatic brain injury, cognitive enhancement and healthy aging.

Skills and Post-Secondary Education Summit 2013, Toronto

The Dean attended this conference which brought together Canadian and international experts to discuss skilled labour challenges, and how educated, highly skilled populations are urgently needed by businesses, economy, and society.
