Opening of the UBC Aquatic Centre

On March 1, Dean Frank attended the official opening of the new UBC Aquatic Centre, located behind the old Student Union Building.

Construction of the facility began in August 2014. With a capacity of 966 bathers, the aquatic centre features a 50-metre, 25-metre, and leisure pool and hot tub, as well as a steam room and sauna. Accessibility ramps provide ingress into the 25-metre and leisure pools, and a permanent power lift into the 34-person hot tub.

EDCP Graduate Student Conference 2017

Dean Frank provided opening remarks for the 2017 EDCP Graduate Students’ Conference, held on March 3. The conference showcases the work by graduate students in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), and provides a safe community space for participants to get feedback from peers and hands-on practice in preparation for other national and international conferences.

UBC’s Next Century Planning Steering Committee Meeting

On March 7, Dean Frank attended a meeting of the UBC’s Next Century Planning Steering Committee, which is working with Professor Santa Ono to develop a new strategic plan which will guide and implement UBC’s key priorities, goals and actions over the next 25 years.

Education Graduate Student Reception

On March 8, over 100 Education graduate students joined Dean Frank for a reception at the Ponderosa Commons Ballroom. The event provided an opportunity to connect with fellow students and faculty members from the Faculty of Education.

15th Annual Indigenous Graduate Student Symposium

Dean Frank attended the 15th Annual Indigenous Graduate Student Symposium on March 10, held at SFU Harbour Centre, Vancouver, on the unceded and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlil̓wətaʔɬ First Nations.

Hosted by the Indigenous Graduate Student Symposium (IGSS) Planning Committee & SAGE (Supporting Aboriginal Graduate Enhancement), the 2017 theme explored transformation through ‘Reconcili-Action’ by thinking about how research interacts with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action and how this process shapes research and experiences in the academy.

Good Luck to Teacher Candidates Leaving on Practicum

On March 15, Dean Blye Frank and Associate Dean of Teacher Education Wendy Carr handed out “good luck” chocolate bars to teacher candidates as they prepared to leave for practicum (10 weeks) followed by the Community Field Experience (3 weeks).

“How Canada Came to Be” – A Performance in Celebration of Canada 150

On March 16, Dean Frank joined over 1,500 people at Evangel Church, Kelowna, for a performance by Glenmore Elementary School in celebration of Canada’s upcoming 150th birthday. This was the final arts experience from Year One of the Dean’s Partnership Development Grant with Glenmore Elementary School (Kelowna) and the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. The collaboration has been worthwhile for community-making and there is much potential to further these efforts.

UBC-O Deans’ Retreat

On March 17, Dean Frank joined Professor Santa Ono and other deans of UBC for a retreat on the UBC Okanagan campus in Kelowna. Discussions centered on the topic of “fundamental principles supporting academic planning.”

Bridging the Diversity Gap in University Leadership and Beyond

While in Kelowna, Dean Frank attended a talk by Professor Malinda Smith, Department of Political Science, University of Alberta, held on March 21 at UBC Okanagan. Dr. Smith discussed her research on diversity and leadership in the Canadian academy, the findings from her forthcoming co-authored book with UBC Press entitled The Equity Myth: Racialization and Indigeneity at Canadian Universities, and some options for NextGen inclusive university leadership.

Teacher Education for All (TEFA) Lunch Presentation

On March 23, Dean Frank participated in a panel discussion with Associate Professor Lisa Loutzenheiser, EDCP, and Saylesh Wesley, writer and Two-Spirit educator in Chilliwack, on “Shaping an Inclusive View of Gender: The Role of Teacher Education.” The conversation explored how traditional, binary ideas of gender have created attitudes, roles, and expectations that have become entrenched in society and limit students from reaching their potential.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Global Conference 2017

From March 29-31, Dean Frank attended the 2017 IB Global Conference in Yokohama, Japan, where educational leaders, decision makers, and practitioners from schools, universities, and governments gathered to share best practices.

As part of the conference, Dean Frank and Gary Little, Director, IB Educator Programmes, UBC Faculty of Education, presented a talk on “The Changing Face of Teacher Education.”

Canadian Research Chair Presentations

In April, the Faculty of Education welcomed two candidates for the prestigious Tier I Canada Research Chair (SSHRC) in Indigenous Resurgence and Reconciliation in Education. In addition to Faculty-wide presentations on their research, each candidate met with Dean Frank, faculty members, and graduate students.

On April 3-4, Dr. Jean-Paul Restoule presented on his research, The answers lie within: Rekindling Indigenous ways of teaching and learning.

On April 5, Dr. Lewis Williams discussed Indigenous Resurgence and Reconciliation in Education: Education and our Collective Continuance in the 21st Century. What Role for Indigenous Resurgence and Reconciliation?

Session for International Educators from Australia and Sweden

On April 3, the Faculty of Education hosted educators from Australia and Sweden who were on study tours to learn more about the BC education system, education leadership, Indigenous Education, and innovative teaching systems in BC. After a tour of Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons, Dean Frank gave a presentation on “Highlights of the teacher education program, and overview of Faculty areas of special focus – diversity, inclusion, outreach, Indigenous Education.”

2016 Research Awards Reception

Dean Frank attended the 2016 Research Awards Reception, held April 5 at the Ponderosa Commons Ballroom. This year’s winners included Professor Bruno Zumbo, Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), who received a 2016 UBC Killam Research Prize in the Senior Scholar, Arts & Humanities category.

Dean’s External Advisory Board Meeting

On April 6, Dean Frank welcomed his External Advisory Board to UBC, taking the opportunity to share highlights about the Faculty.

Desi (Desmond) MacEwan

Desi (Desmond) MacEwan | A fourth-year PhD candidate studying sport & exercise psychology within the School of Kinesiology, Desi’s research focuses on teamwork in sport. He was awarded the Banting Fellowship earlier this year.

Ji Ai Cho | A doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership, Ji Ai’s research is based on her work through an NGO called Education Beyond Borders.

Dave Robinson | A third-year Indigenous student in the NITEP program, Dave also coaches boxing and mentors youth through carving. A recent retirement event for Dr. Jo-ann Archibald featured the unveiling of “Dancing Flames,” a carving created by Dave in honour of Dr. Archibald commissioned by the Faculty of Education.

Mental Health Literacy Event

Dean Frank and Associate Dean Wendy Carr, Teacher Education, hosted an event on April 18 at Cecil Green House to raise awareness about UBC’s work in mental health literacy.

2017 UBC 25 Year Club Dinner

Dean Frank attended the 47th annual recognition dinner on April 20, where two UBC Faculty of Education staff members were inducted into the UBC 25 Year Club:

  • Anna Ip, EDCP – 25 years
  • Linda Williams, NITEP – 35 years

Also recognized at the dinner was Paul Chan from UBC IT, who has provided IT support to the Faculty of Education for many of his 25 years at UBC.

2017 AERA Annual Meeting, San Antonio, TX

From April 26-30, Dean Frank attended the 2017 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting, held this year in San Antonio, TX.

While at AERA, Dean Frank attended the Forum for International Networking in Education (FINE) Forum on April 26. As part of an international panel speaking on the forum theme of “How to work with…”, Dean Frank gave a presentation on working with government.

U21 Deans of Education Meetings

While at AERA, Dean Frank attended the April 27 meeting of the Universitas 21 (U21) Deans of Education group. The group meets twice annually for the discussion of issues in Education of common interest and concern across the participating U21 institutions. Dean Frank provided a brief report on the UBC Faculty of Education during the Deans’ Roundtable, and as part of the Focus Discussion panel presented on “Be sure your Prime Minister is an Alumnus: Working with governments in the Canadian Context.”

8th Annual Evening in Support of CampOUT!

On May 1, 100 guests attended the eighth annual gala in support of CampOUT!, an exceptional youth leadership program that is making a positive impact in the lives of BC’s queer and trans youth. Held in the home of Heidi and Richard Coglon, the event raised a record $125,000 which will fund a five-day, four-night camp on Gambier Island, providing an inclusive space where youth can develop leadership skills, build self-esteem and connect to resources to support their health and wellbeing.

Adler University Vancouver Campus Grand Opening

Dean Frank attended the grand opening of Adler University’s new Vancouver campus on May 1. Located in downtown Vancouver, Adler University continues the pioneering work of the first community psychologist Alfred Adler by graduating socially responsible practitioners, engaging communities, and advancing social justice.

UBC Strategic Planning Meeting with the President

On May 2, UBC’s Next Century Steering Committee met with Professor Santa Ono to continue the discussion of UBC’s next Strategic Plan.

Although the strategic plan is still being developed, several key themes were identified from the results of the web-based survey this past winter, and have been distilled into eight strategic priorities:

  1. Local/Regional/Global
  2. Working Across Disciplines
  3. Creativity, Innovation and Risk Taking
  4. Engagement and Reciprocity
  5. Our Community and Wellbeing
  6. Sustainability
  7. Indigeneity
  8. Diversity

and four core institutional activities:

2017 Cmolik Prize Reception

On May 2, Dean Frank attended the award ceremony for the 2017 Cmolik Prize for the Enhancement of Public Education. Awarded biennially, the $100,000 prize was endowed to the Faculty of Education, Simon Fraser University (SFU) by Russ and Ellen Cmolik to recognize recipients who have developed and implemented an invention, innovation, concept, process, or procedure that enhances educational practice in the K-12 public school system in BC.

This year’s winner was Associate Professor Peter Liljedahl, SFU, Building Thinking Classrooms.

The Power of Teaching for Diversity and Inclusion

On May 3, Dean Frank joined approximately 90 alumni and guests at TELUS Garden in downtown Vancouver for a special presentation of The Power of Teaching for Diversity and Inclusion. Alumni speakers presented on topics such as active witnessing, inclusion in the classroom, indigenous education and urban indigeneity, and queering classrooms across BC.

International Conference on Cultural Studies and Education

On May 4, Dean Frank offered opening remarks at the International Conference on Cultural Studies and Education, hosted by the Department of Educational Studies (EDST) at Ponderosa Commons Oak House.

The conference addressed various questions about cultural studies and/of education, including:

  • What would cultural studies look like if it took up its education origins more seriously?
  • What is the historical, contemporary and potential future of the relationship between education and cultural studies?
  • What has constituted and will constitute cultural studies of education theory and praxis work?
  • Where and what is the pedagogy of performative cultural studies and how can it be captured and shared? How and when are cultural studies projects a form of education?
  • Does identity (still) have a place in cultural studies and/of education?
  • What are the pros and cons of the institutionalization, “disciplining” and the “programming” of cultural studies and what role does/should education play?

Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) Site Visit

On May 8, Dean Frank attended a CPA accreditation site visit meeting for the Ph.D. program in School Psychology, which is offered by the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS).

ALDP Year-End Celebration

On May 9, Dean Frank attended the Year-End Celebration reception for the UBC Academic Leadership Development Program (ALDP). The ALDP is a cohort-based, leadership development program offered each year to new department heads, program directors, associate deans, and other academic leaders at UBC.

ABCDE Symposium: Aboriginal Student Recruitment and Retention in Teacher Education

Dean Frank offered opening remarks to the over 75 people gathered at UBC on May 10 to discuss Aboriginal Student Recruitment and Retention in Teacher Education at a symposium hosted by the Association of British Columbia Deans of Education (ABCDE) and the Aboriginal Working Group.

This one-day symposium engaged teacher education staff, student coordinators, faculty, instructors, administrators, recruiters, and educational government in group dialogues focusing on access and recruitment policies that support Aboriginal student recruitment and retention. Indigenous pre-service teachers and early career educators shared their paths to and experiences in post-secondary education. Attendees shared innovative practices and curriculum to engage with Indigenous perspectives, content, and approaches.

Retirement Reception for Dr. Jo-ann Archibald

On May 10, Dean Frank hosted a special retirement reception recognizing the extensive contributions of Professor Jo-ann Archibald. For more than 40 years, Dr. Archibald (Q’um Q’um Xiiem), Indigenous scholar, author, and pioneer in the advancement of Indigenous education, has inspired many students and colleagues. A professor of Educational Studies, Dr. Archibald (BEd ’72) served as Associate Dean for Indigenous Education and Director of the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP).

A name transition ceremony led by Musqueam Elder Larry Grant and modified for the University context, representing a way of passing on oral history and genealogy, also took place. The responsibilities of the name c̓ec̓əwəłtən sni̓w̓stənəq, given by Musqueam in 2005 to the UBC Faculty of Education’s Associate Dean for Indigenous Education position, held by Dr. Archibald, were passed on to Dr. Jan Hare as she now holds the position.

2017 BC Teacher Education Roundtable

The Faculty of Education hosted more than 125 educators and administrators from across the province to the 2017 BC Teacher Education Roundtable conference, held May 11-12 at the Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons. After opening remarks from Dean Frank, this year’s conference, Powering Up Practicum, was kicked off by keynote speaker Professor Tony Clarke, EDCP, followed by a second full day of plenary sessions and workshops.

At a special reception held on the second day of the BC Education Roundtable, Dr. Kim Franklin, Chair of the Association of BC Deans of Education (ABCDE) announced the winners of the ABCDE annual awards for outstanding service to education in BC:

  • The ABCDE Teacher Educator for 2017 is James Alexander (Sandy) Hill, an instructor in Education at the University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford.
  • ABCDE also presented Professor Jo-ann Archibald, EDST, with an award for her Lifelong Service to Education. Dr. Archibald has a long and impressive provincial, national, and international record of excellence in Aboriginal Teacher Education, and is well-known for her exceptional work with First Nations bands, teachers, and students. Dr. Archibald co-chaired ABCDE’s Task Force on Aboriginal Education, and was a key player in the preparation and adoption of a National Accord on Indigenous Education by the Association of Canadian Deans of Education.

Connected Learning Matters: Innovative Leadership BC and Beyond

On May 12, Dean Frank spoke at the “Connected Learning Matters: Innovative Leadership BC and Beyond” symposium, hosted by the Networks of Inquiry and Innovation (NOII) at the Westin Wall Centre in Richmond. The title of the presentation was, “Beyond the Celebration of Diversity: Taking Difference Into Account in Leadership.”

Dean Frank joined members of UBC’s senior leadership team at a retreat on May 16. Topics of conversation included on-going discussions around UBC’s strategic plan.

Retirement Occasion

Dean Frank hosted a retirement reception on May 17 for Professors Jo-ann Archibald, EDST, Shauna Butterwick, EDST, and Hillel Goelman, ECPS, to recognize their outstanding contributions to the Faculty of Education.

QMunity Breakfast

Dean Frank attended the QMunity Breakfast held on May 19, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, where Mayor Gregor Robertson announced that QMUNITY will be part of a redevelopment project that will see the construction of a new building including purpose-built facilities for QMUNITY. QMUNITY is a non-profit organization based in Vancouver, BC that works to improve queer, trans, and Two-Spirit lives.

2017 Alumni Teacher Award

On May 19, Dean Frank presented the 2017 Alumni Teacher Award to this year’s winner, Bonnie Sutherland, BEd’69, in recognition of her outstanding achievements which are making exceptional impacts in the lives of students and learning communities.

In addition to teaching grades and subjects ranging from elementary to secondary, from Physical education to Math to English, Ms. Sutherland introduced the Advanced Placement program in the Delta BC School District, taught AP courses, and coached field hockey for 15 years before retiring in 2003. Together with her husband, Donald Sutherland (also a UBC grad, BEd (Elem)’81, now deceased) Ms. Sutherland founded Afretech, a non-profit organization that sends about 30,000 books annually to Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Since the organization began in 1992, it has expanded to Asia and also supports First Nations community libraries in BC.

Ms. Sutherland’s newest venture features ARES, a “Library in a Box.” A small, rugged, wi-fi-enabled shoe-box-sized server and battery designed for schools without libraries, labs, or textbooks, ARES can withstand arid, dusty conditions and power surges. ARES is preloaded with Wikipedia, Khan Academy videos, TedTalks, literature, and other educational resources, and has been installed in about 24 schools in Africa.

On May 19, Dean Frank and Dr. Wang Fang, Director, International Initiatives, met with a delegation from the Zheijiang Provincial Education Association for International Exchange to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions.

Senior Leadership Changes

Dr. Blye Frank Appointed Dean pro tem Faculty of Education UBC Okanagan

On December 14, Dr. Angela Redish, Provost and Vice-President Academic, announced the appointment of Dr. Frank as Dean pro tem Okanagan campus, effective January 1, 2017 for a one-year term. No merger of the two faculties has taken place. The appointment will facilitate and support the next steps in restructuring the Okanagan Faculty of Education, and discussions are on-going about the various possibilities.

Head, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS)

Dr. Shelley Hymel has been appointed Head of the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2017.

Update – Programmatic Sustainability Initiative (PSI)

As announced in late January, the Faculty of Education is underway with the Programmatic Sustainability Initiative (PSI). The PSI is an evidence-informed process that provides the Faculty’s leadership teams, faculty, and staff with tools to help us link resource allocation decisions to strategic priorities.

Two Town Halls were held on January 30 and 31, where faculty and staff joined in a public discussion about the PSI, the timeline, and concerns and questions about the process.

Here’s where we are now:

  • The Programmatic Sustainability Leadership Team is currently finalizing the criteria for assessing proposals based upon the Faculty of Education’s Self-Study (2015), as well as the External Review Report and our Response to the External Review (2016).

Ponderosa Commons Tour

On December 1, Dean Frank and Dee Dee Sung, Assistant Dean, Development & Alumni Engagement (DAE) welcomed Mrs. Alanna Wong, BEd (Elem) ’79, Dip (Ed) ’07, and guests, retired teachers and alumni of UBC Education, for a tour of the Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons and luncheon. Mrs. Wong is the Director of the Books for Me Literacy Foundation, as well as a retired Teacher Librarian and retired Elementary School Teacher (K-7). The visit provided an excellent opportunity for community engagement and exploration of possible future involvement with the Faculty of Education.

President’s Working Committee on Disability Culture, Art, and Equity

Dean Frank joined Dr. Leslie Roman, Professor, Educational Studies, for Professor Santa Ono’s announcement of the President’s Working Committee on Disability Culture, Art and Equity on December 9. Dr. Roman co-chairs the committee with Dr. Neil Guppy, Professor, Sociology. As part of their mandate, the committee will work to answer the questions of, “What can be learned from people with disabilities?” and “How can UBC support the access of students, faculty and staff to the built environment but also to the arts, culture, and creative-meaning of images that speak from the lived experiences of students, faculty and staff and other members of the diverse disability community?”

ABCDE-FNESC-IAHLA Aboriginal Education Working Group

Dean Frank met with the Association of BC Deans of Education (ABCDE), First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC), and Indigenous Adult Higher Learning Association (IAHLA) Aboriginal Education Working Group on January 5. Together, the group works to identify and affirm specific research that is needed, including (but not limited to) pathways into teacher education, barriers to recruitment and retention of students in teacher education programs, and issues related to the hiring and promotion practices of educators within BC’s K-12 system.

International Partnerships

Along with Dr. Anna Kindler, Senior Advisor, International, Dean Frank met with the principals of University Hill Secondary (Mr. T. Mcgeer) and Norma Rose Point Elementary (Ms. Rosa Fazio) on January 6 to discuss possible international partnerships.

Teacher Education for All (TEFA) Sessions

On January 11, Dean Frank attended the TEFA session, Diversity Cubed! Teaching and Supporting Intersecting Identities. Three panelists from diverse cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations and gender identities who support youth explored the complex puzzle of culture, faith, sexuality and family as considerations in teaching and supporting students’ various identities.

This was followed on January 12 by the second of two one-hour professional TEFA learning sessions, “Gender Identity in the Workplace,” facilitated by TransFocus Consulting. The workshop provided a wealth of knowledge, practices, and procedures to help ensure that all faculty, staff, students, and visitors are treated not only respectfully but in accordance with this new Human Rights legislation.

Lunar New Year Dinner

Dean Frank joined Professor Santa Ono and over 150 UBC alumni, donors, volunteers, current student leaders, and friends at the annual alumni UBC Lunar New Year Dinner at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre on January 17. After a reception and photo opportunities with Professor Ono, the Year of the Rooster celebration was kicked off with a Lion Dance performed by the UBC Kung-Fu Club. Education Career Fair

On January 20, Dean Frank joined Teacher Education Office (TEO) program advisors at the Education Career Fair, BC’s largest teacher recruiting event. Held at the AMS Student Nest this year, the fair gave teacher candidates the opportunity to meet and present themselves to recruiting officers from BC school districts, officials from school districts in other provinces and territories, and international recruiters seeking teachers for a variety of countries.

BEd Students from East China Normal University (ECNU)

On January 25, Dean Frank met with 32 visiting third-year BEd students from East China Normal University (ECNU) to wish them a “Happy Lunar New Year” and hand out red envelopes. The ECNU students were visiting the UBC Point Grey campus for a three-week Excellent Teacher Training program at the Faculty of Education, which combined course and classroom teaching experience, visits to schools in and around Vancouver for classroom observation and interaction, and special guest speakers. Located in Shanghai, ECNU is one of the most prestigious universities in China and is the first normal university founded in the country after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.

The Legal and Professional Landscape: Sexuality and Gender Identity in Schools

Dean Frank attended a Teacher Education for All (TEFA) presentation held on January 26, where BC lawyer/advocate barbara findlay, QC, and BCTF President Glen Hansman outlined and answered questions regarding the legal and professional rights and responsibilities of educators in BC around sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI).

PhDs Go Public 2017 Research Talk Series: Engaging Education for Public Good

On January 26, Dean Frank provided opening remarks at the PhDs Go Public 2017 Research Talk Series: Engaging Education for Public Good. Education PhD candidates Ron Darvin (Teaching English as a Second Language) and Sereana Naepi (Educational Studies) joined five fellow PSI (Public Scholars Initiative) scholars to present on how their research is contributing to the public good and making a change in the world.

On February 16, Dean Frank joined members of The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) and guests for a conversation with three LGBT activists from Eastern Africa. Peter Njane, Executive Director, Ishtar Kenya, Warry Ssenfuka, Executive Director, Freedom and Roam Uganda, and Dennis Wamala, Director of Programmes, Icebreakers Uganda, spoke about their struggles in Uganda and Kenya, and the life-saving work of their community-based organizations on HIV & AIDS.

Western Deans of Education (WADE) 2017 Conference

Dean Frank joined other Western Deans of Education (WADE) at their 2017 Conference, held February 23-25 at the Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta. The conference addressed the key role that Faculties of Education can undertake to promote health and wellness within their own programming, and also to support pre-service teachers entering the K-12 school system.

CampOUT! Community Celebration

Dean Frank attended the CampOUT! Community Celebration on February 28. CampOUT! is a social justice summer camp for queer, trans, Two-Spirit, questioning, and allied youth ages 14-21 from across BC & the Yukon. Housed in the UBC Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice (GRSJ) under the Faculty of Arts, CampOUT! provides a supportive space for LGBTQ2S+ youth to celebrate and be celebrated for who they are.

Update on Faculty Searches

Head, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS)

On October 24, Dean Frank advised the Department that he had accepted the recommendation of the Dean’s Advisory Committee for Appointment of a Head of ECPS that he not move forward with an offer to Dr. Ada Sinacore. He thanked the members of the committee for their work and advised that next steps would be pending.

Recipients of the 2016 Teacher Education program student awards were honoured at the annual Bachelor of Education Student Awards Night held at the AMS Student Nest on November 22. In addition to the over 190 student awards given out, Jo-Anne Naslund, Librarian, UBC Education Library, was recognized as the 2016 recipient of the Murray Elliott Service Award for Outstanding Service to the Teacher Education Program for her long history of exceptional work in teacher education in our Faculty.

Earlier in the evening, Dean Frank hosted a Donor Appreciation Dinner to acknowledge the generosity of the many donors who support the Bachelor of Education Awards Program.

Association of British Columbia Deans of Education (ABCDE)

On November 18, Dean Frank attended a meeting of the Association of British Columbia Deans of Education (ABCDE), held at SFU’s Downtown Vancouver campus. Dr. Frank has served as ABCDE Treasurer since 2012. Among topics of discussion were the confirmation that the BC Education Plan has been incorporated into all BC teacher education programs, and support for the standard related to Indigenous Education.

 

Luncheon with the Anastasiou Family

Dr. Frank lunched at SAGE Bistro with Dr. Clifford J. “Kip” Anastasiou and Mrs. Joan Anastasiou on November 1, where they discussed ways to support young science education professors in furthering their research. Dr Kip Anastasiou (BA ’52 Biology & Botany; MEd ’57) is a professor emeritus of Mathematics and Science Education (1994). Mrs. Joan Anastasiou has earned four UBC Degrees (BA ’51, MA ’54 Majored in Biology & Botany, BLib ’69, MLib ’76).

Wild About Vancouver Outdoor Education Festival

Dr. Hartley Banack, Lecturer and Coordinator, Outdoor Environmental Education, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), presented a framed poster to Dean Frank for the Faculty of Education’s generous support of the Wild About Vancouver (WAV) Outdoor Education Festival, held annually in April.

The poster is an original art piece commissioned by WAV from local Vancouver artist Marcus Wild, and will be hung on the 6th floor of the Neville Scarfe Building.

The next WAV Festival will be held April 22-30, 2017.

Dean Frank joined athletes, coaches, staff and alumni at the 2016 UBC Academic All-Canadian Breakfast held on November 2, where UBC honoured 122 varsity athletes, including 38 Faculty of Education School of Kinesiology student-athletes, as Academic All-Canadians.

To be an Academic All-Canadian the Thunderbird athletes must be full time UBC students and achieve an overall average of 80% or above.

On October 26-28, Dean Frank attended the fall meeting of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE) in Winnipeg. The main focus for the meeting was reconciliation, and how faculties, schools, and departments of education are approaching reconciliation in their institutions. There was also a review of the renewed Accord on Initial Teacher Education.

Dean Frank attended the 2016 alumni UBC Achievement Awards on November 1, where eight members of the UBC community were honoured for their outstanding contributions.

On October 20, the Dean hosted his External Advisory Board on the 18th floor of Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons.

The Faculty of Education Senior Leadership Team each introduced themselves and gave a brief overview of their portfolios and 3 main areas of focus for the coming year. There were many engaging discussions and new connections were formed between the Board and new Senior Leadership members.

Luncheon with Ms. Alanna Wong

On October 24, Dr. Frank and Dee Dee Sung were joined for lunch at SAGE Bistro by Ms. Alanna Wong (BEd ’79, DipEd ’07). A Faculty of Education alumna, retired teacher librarian, and retired elementary school teacher, Ms. Wong is looking for ways to engage with the Faculty.

Following the October 24 meeting, the Dean and Dee Dee met again with Ms. Wong, along with six retired teachers/BEd Alumni who joined Dee Dee, Dr. Wendy Carr, Denise Luong, and Dean Frank for a tour of Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons and lunch on the 17th floor. Ms. Wong has been the director of the “Books for Me Literacy Foundation” since November 2015.

 

UBC Okanagan Meetings

In October, Dean Frank attended meetings at UBC’s Okanagan campus, where discussions are on-going regarding a possible partnership between the UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan Faculties of Education (one Faculty: two sites).

Dr. Frank attended the official opening of the new Orchard Commons building on October 19. The facility is one of five commons projects on UBC’s Point Grey campus, and will provide residence space for first year students, as well as classroom and office spaces for Vantage College.

Teacher Education For All (TEFA) Panel

On October 18, Dr. Frank attended the Teacher Education for All (TEFA) panel discussion, Walking the Talk: Creating Learning Environments that Include Sexual and Gender Diversity, where a panel of Faculty of Education members and others discussed how they are developing inclusive pedagogical approaches that recognize, and intervene to transform, the impacts of systemic discrimination towards sexual and gender minorities.

Dr. Mark Beauchamp, Dee Dee Sung, and Dr. Lee Gunderson joined the Dean for a tour of the new Pacific Family Autism Centre in Richmond.

On October 18, Dr. Frank joined Dr. Lee Gunderson, Head pro tem, Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Dr. Mark Beauchamp, and Dee Dee Sung for a tour of the new Pacific Family Autism Centre in Richmond.

The Centre forms the hub of the Pacific Autism Family Network (PAFN), which will eventually include eight other “spokes” located throughout BC. Officially opened in November, the Centre is a state-of-the-art facility with clinics, labs, classrooms, observation rooms and research spaces which will support approximately 69,000 people of all ages in BC with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The Faculty of Education is hoping to work with the PAFN to create a centre of excellence in autism.

On October 18, the Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES) and the Faculty of Education co-hosted a networking breakfast meeting for CHES faculty, scholars, current and selected past fellows, and Faculty of Education faculty and graduate students working in the field of health professions education research.

The breakfast provided an opportunity to get acquainted and share the work being done in each unit to facilitate future collaboration.

Dean Frank invited alumni and friends to attend his inaugural Frankly Speaking event on October 11 at UBC Robson Square in Vancouver. The theme was Mental Health Literacy — one in five Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime and mental health issues affect up to half the total student population at many universities. Mental health literacy encompasses the knowledge, beliefs and abilities that enable the recognition, management or prevention of mental health problems with a range of benefits including prevention, early recognition and intervention, and reduction of stigma associated with mental illness.

Speakers included: Professor Santa J. Ono, President and Vice-Chancellor, UBC; Dr. Stan Kutcher, Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health; and Jessica La Rochelle, Assistant Director, NITEP.

Dean Frank attended the Canadian Education Association (CEA) Symposium, First Nations Schools First! Sharing Successful Indigenous Learning, on October 6 at the Musqueam Cultural Centre. The symposium focused on the urgent need to ensure the success of all Indigenous students, and featured a keynote presentation by the Rt. Honourable Paul Martin.

Later that evening, the Dean, Ms. Dee Dee Sung, and Drs. Wendy Carr, Jan Hare, and Mark Edwards attended a dinner with the Rt. Honourable Paul Martin, where they discussed Indigenous Education and the work being done by UBC’s Faculty of Education and The Martin Family Initiative.

External Examiner – Oral Defence

On August 3, Dr. Frank acted as external examiner for the oral defense of Brendan Kwiatkowski, Trinity Western University (TWU), for his Master’s thesis, Growing up Male: A Social-Emotional Program for Grade 11 Males with Behavioural needs in a BC Secondary School (Supervisor: Dr. Allyson Jule). Mr. Kwiatkowski is the first graduate of TWU’s MA in Educational Studies, Special Education.

 

External Examiner – MA Thesis

Dean Frank acted as external examiner at the final Master’s thesis defence for Dana Dmytro (UBC School Psychology) on August 31, The Role of Gender Norms in Adolescent Boys’ Navigation of Romantic Relationships (Supervisors: Drs. Laurie Ford and Ann Cameron).

ECER 2016 Conference

From August 23-25, Dean Frank attended the European Educational Research Association ECER 2016 Conference at University College, Dublin, Ireland. This year’s theme, Leading Education: The Distinct Contributions of Educational Research and Researchers, invited participants to explore tensions and challenges in educational research and leadership in the contemporary educational research landscape.

Chair – Final Doctoral Exam

On July 29, Dr. Frank acted as chair at the final doctoral exam for Natalie Miller, UBC Faculty of Arts, for her thesis, Social cognitions of children with disruptive behaviors (Research supervisor: Dr. Charlotte Johnston).

 

39th Annual UBC/BCPVPA Short Course

Dr. Frank attended the closing reception and dinner of the UBC/British Columbia Principals’ & Vice-Principals’ Association (BCPVPA) Short Course on July 8.

Short Course is a five-day intensive program held annually at UBC in July, where newly-appointed and experienced principals and vice-principals from across BC come together to immerse themselves in studies to develop capacities to lead and manage schools and build networks with colleagues.

Dean Blye Frank was delighted to attend the Ice Cream Social for Teacher Candidates event on July 13, which was jointly organized by the Teacher Education Office, the Education Students’ Association, and the Dean’s Office. This annual event celebrates the end of the academic year and the start of teacher candidates’ future as UBC alumni.

The Education Students’ Association distributed ice cream and sold tickets to their end of year Graduation Banquet, while Development & Alumni oversaw “branding” of teacher candidates with the TEO’s “ALUMNI” tattoos and gave out Alumni t-shirts.

On July 8, Dr. Frank and Dee Dee Sung hosted the Derpak family for a luncheon and tour of the new Education Centre at Ponderosa Commons. The Derpaks are significant donors to the Faculty, with Education alumnus William Derpak having graduated with a BEd (Elem) in 1957, the year after Neville Scarfe was declared the dean of the new Faculty of Education.

 

24th International Academic Conference

From June 29-July 3, Dr. Frank attended the 24th International Academic Conference in Barcelona, Spain, organized by the International Institute of Social and Economic Sciences (IISES). Keynote Speaker Professor Bob Fox from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, delivered the speech, Flexible Frameworks for Blended Learning in Higher Education.

Update on Faculty Searches

On November 20, the Advisory Committee conducted successful Skype conversations with 3 shortlisted candidates that resulted in all three being recommended for campus visits. One candidate has since withdrawn their application.

The two remaining candidates are scheduled for two-day campus visits in January:

Head, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP)

The application deadline was November 30.

The Advisory Committee met on December 11 to review the applications, and have shortlisted five applicants for an initial Skype conversation to take place in January 2016.

Update on External Reviews

Faculty of Education

As part of the on-going External Review of the Faculty of Education, the Faculty submitted a self-study to the Provost on October 16.

The External Review Committee conducted an on-site visit on November 16-18.  Members of the Committee were:

  • Dr. Mary Kalantzis, Dean, College of Education, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • Dr. Dilson Rassier, Dean, Faculty of Education, McGill University
  • Dr. Fern Snart, Professor and former Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Alberta

The Faculty of Education External Review Report is expected soon; in the meantime, the Short Term Academic Planning Initiative is working on several short-term academic planning initiatives in anticipation of the Faculty’s Response to the External Review.

Master of Educational Technology (MET)

The final report from the External Review team was received on September 1. The report was reviewed and discussed by Drs. Tom Sork and Mark Edwards, along with the MET Advisory Committee and other appropriate committees/individuals, and their written response was received October 30. All reports are now available on the Dean`s Office website.

In December, the Dean attended the Fall MET Advisory and MET Management & Budget Committee meetings, and announced the amalgamation of these two committees into a single MET Executive Committee, to be chaired by Dr. Jenna Shapka in OGPR with Departmental faculty representatives as well as representation from PDCE and CTLT and the Faculty of Education Finance Office. The terms of reference and membership will be confirmed early in the new year.

Also in the new year and as part of the MET Review implementation plan, a “Reimagining the MET Task Force” will be set up and chaired by the Dean. Priority areas as recommended in the MET Self-Study and in the reports from the External Reviewers will begin to be addressed through these two newly formed groups.

Dr. Frank joined the School of Kinesiology at their annual KIN Holiday Party, held December 3 at the Arbutus Club.

Presidential Search Committee

Dr. Frank is one of two Deans’ representatives, along with Dr. Catherine Dauvergne Dean of the Allard School of Law, sitting on the Presidential Search Committee.

On December 2, the Presidential Search Committee held its second meeting. Discussions included the search timeline, best practices, and communication strategy, and preliminary discussions on the presidential position profile.

The Committee will be seeking feedback from the UBC community and other stakeholders at a public town hall in January, with a view to finalizing the profile by the beginning of February.

Dean Frank hosted a luncheon at Sage Bistro on November 24 and a dinner at his home on November 25 to honour Windle Trust Executive Director Marangu Njogu, one of four recipients of an honorary degree from UBC during the Fall 2015 Congregation ceremonies.

Windle Trust is a Faculty of Education partner in the development of the secondary teacher education program in the Dadaab refugee settlement in Kenya.

Canadian High Commission, Canada House

Dean Frank joined Drs. Marv Westwood and George Belliveau at a reception held November 9 at the Canadian High Commission at Canada House in London, UK, where the Veterans Transition Network (VTN), a program developed through UBC’s Faculty of Education to help veterans with the transition to civilian life, was showcased. The event included a performance of the theatre piece CONTACT! Unload, which highlights the challenges faced by veterans returning to normal life after combat duty.

On November 11, the VTN group was honoured by a visit from HRH Prince Harry of Wales, whose Endeavour Fund provides support for wounded service personnel and veterans.

China/Hong Kong Trip

In October, Dean Frank, Dr. Tom Sork, and Dr. Wendy Carr travelled to China and Hong Kong, where they attended conferences at Northeast Normal University (NENU) in Changchun, China, including the 2015 Tri-Nations (China, Canada, Australia) Educational Symposium.

Following the meetings in Changchun, they visited South China Normal University in Guangzhou, and the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau in China.

The trip finished up in Hong Kong, where they visited the Hong Kong Institute of Education, and Dean Frank hosted an Alumni Dinner for Faculty of Education alumni in the Hong Kong area.

Keynote speaker Mr. Irwin Elman, Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth of Ontario, and President, Canadian Council of Child and Youth Advocates, spoke to the theme, “Keeping our Promise to Children: the Relevance of Korczak’s Legacy for Children Today.”

The evening included presentation of the inaugural Janusz Korczak Association of Canada Graduate Scholarship in Children’s Rights and Canadian Indigenous Education for 2014-2015 to Faculty of Education doctoral candidate Matthew D. Lee.

    Dr. Lee Gunderson, Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED), began a 12-month appointment as Department Head pro tem on July 1, 2015.
     
    On September 3, the search committee met to short list from the twelve applications received to date, although the search is still open.

  • Head, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP)

    The search committee met on September 2 to review the advertisement and begin the development of the questions for the candidate interviews. It is anticipated the ad will be in circulation by the end of September.

Update on External Reviews

  • Faculty of Education

    As per procedure when a Dean reaches the final year of an appointment term, the Office of the Provost has initiated an External Review of the Faculty of Education. Dr. Herbert Rosengarten, Professor Emeritus, Department of English, Faculty of Arts will act as Review Coordinator and facilitate the review on behalf of Dr. Angela Redish, Provost and Vice-President Academic pro tem.
     
    Three external reviewers will be onsite November 16-18, 2015. Katy Ellsworth, Executive Director of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education will facilitate the preparation of a self-study document, which is required as part of the review.
     
    In August, requests for data and information were sent to relevant units. The deadline for submitting data and information to the Dean’s Office for inclusion in the self-study was September 18. On October 16, the self-study and other materials will be sent to the Provost’s Office.

  • Master of Educational Technology (MET)

    The external review of MET was held on July 2-3, and the final report from the external review team was received on September 1. The report will be reviewed and discussed by Drs. Tom Sork and Mark Edwards, along with the MET Advisory Committee and other appropriate committees/individuals.
     
    The response from Drs. Sork and Edwards is expected September 25.

  • Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS)

    Department response and strategic plan received and forwarded to the Provost office June 30.

Dr. Pam Ratner, Senior Associate Dean, Administration and Innovation, has accepted an appointment as Interim Vice-Provost and AVP Enrolment and Academic Facilities, effective July 1, 2015 for a one-year term.

Dean Frank thanks Dr. Ratner for her dedication and service in her role as Head, EDST pro tem and then as Senior Associate Dean, Administration and Innovation, and wishes her all the best in her new role.

In this new role, Dr. Bryson will provide the Dean with high-level support and advice in the areas of administration infrastructures and innovation, and also assist him with the ongoing development and implementation of the Faculty’s strategic plan. Included in Dr. Bryson’s portfolio are:

  • Oversight of the Faculty of Education’s overall budget
  • Faculty recruitment, appointment, reappointment, promotion and tenure processes
  • Matters concerning faculty affairs administration including salary, leaves and retirement
  • Mentoring of newly appointed faculty members
  • Matters concerning the Faculty’s space allocation (Scarfe and Ponderosa Commons)

Visioning Session for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

On September 3, Dean Frank met with representatives from a variety of agencies, including the Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), the UBC Department of Psychiatry, Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation, Capilano College, Douglas College, ABLE Development Clinic, and the Pacific Autism Family Centre (PAFC) at a visioning session for a provincial educational and vocational strategy for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Launch of Year of Alumni / Education’s 100

On September 2, Dean Frank announced the launch of the Year of Alumni. As part of the Faculty’s The Year of… initiative, and in conjunction with UBC’s Centennial, the Faculty of Education will be recognizing the achievements of 100 outstanding and diverse alumni from September 2015 to August 2016. The first in a series of Education’s 100 showcases features eleven Indigenous Education leaders.

A reception was held on April 23 to recognize and honour the 2014/15 UBC Student Awards recipients, including the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP), which was selected to receive the 2014/15 Alfred Scow Award. This award is granted annually by the the Vice-President, Students Office to an undergraduate program or department that has contributed significant and positive impacts towards student development.

On May 23, Dean Frank attended the First Nations House of Learning Graduation Celebration at the UBC First Nations Longhouse. Fifty-one students, including 17 Indigenous Education graduates and honourary NITEP graduate Elder Larry Grant, participated in the largest Aboriginal student graduation celebration in the history of the Longhouse.

Dr. Frank chaired an ACDE panel at CSSE, “Re-imaging the PhD: New forms and futures for graduate education,” which attempted to begin a conversation around the parameters, content, and purposes of doctoral education.

 

Dean’s Senior Leadership Spring Retreat

The Dean’s Advisory Committee (DAC) met for their annual retreat on June 9.

National Guidance and Implementation Committee on the Public Health Response to Family Violence

On June 11-12, Dean Frank attended a meeting of the National Guidance and Implementation Committee working group on Pan-Canadian Public Health Guidance on Family Violence in Ottawa.

Dean Blye Frank co-chairs this recently established committee with Dr. Carole Herbert, former dean of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. The committee supports the implementation of a national project designed to provide a consistent knowledge base for professionals to prevent, detect and combat family violence and child abuse. The project is part of a 10‐year, $100 million investment announced by Canada’s Minister of Health Rona Ambrose in February 2015.

Dr. Frank hosted a retirement celebration on June 16, where faculty, staff, and students honoured the contributions of retiring faculty members Dr. Marv Westwood, Professor, Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS) and Dr. Jon Shapiro, Professor, Language and Literacy Education (LLED).

Dean Frank and the Advisory Committee for the search of the next Director in the School of Kinesiology are pleased to welcome two candidates for interviews in September. Each candidate will give a public talk on their leadership and scholarship on the first day of their visit to campus in the War Memorial Building, Room 100 at 12:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Dr. Paul van Donkelaar is Professor and Director of the School of Health and Exercise Sciences at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Prior to his arrival in 2011, he was a faculty member in the Department of Human Physiology at the University of Oregon. Dr. van Donkelaar meets with members of the Faculty of Education and the School of Kinesiology on September 24-25.

Dr. Robert Boushel is Chair in Physiology at the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences in Stockholm. He also works with the Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre, Swedish Olympic Committee and the Department of Clinical Physiology, Huddinge Hospital, Karolinska Institute. Dr. Boushel meets with members of the School of Kinesiology on September 29-30.

Dr. Ali Abdi is confirmed as Head of the Department of Educational Studies (EDST). Please join Dean Blye Frank in welcoming Dr. Abdi, whose five-year term commenced on September 1, 2014.

Appointment Announcements Affiliated with the Office of the Dean

Dr. Steve Cardwell, Director of UBC’s Executive Educational Leadership Program

As Director of the forthcoming Executive Educational Leadership Program, Dr. Cardwell will be addressing the pressing need for well-prepared and mentored senior leaders for the British Columbia K-12 system and beyond by building collaborative and collegial relationships with BC’s Ministry of Education, school superintendents, assistant superintendents, directors of instruction, and other senior personnel in BC school districts. His appointment will commence in January 2015.

Gary Little, Director of UBC’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Educator Stream

Mr. Little will be responsible for international student recruitment, liaising with local and national IB organizations, identifying and engaging international program sponsors for deserving students, developing and implementing a strategic plan for UBC’s IB programs, and representing UBC’s IB Educator programs locally, nationally, and internationally. His appointment commenced in June 2014.

Clara Ng, Finance Director

Clara Ng will be providing comprehensive financial leadership, expertise and direction to the Faculty, and will be working closely with the Faculty of Education’s Leadership Team, Heads and Administrators across all Faculty of Education’s departments and units on various finance and budget related matters. Her appointment commenced on July 7, 2014.

Dr. Tom Sork, Senior Associate Dean, International

With increased activity in the International portfolio, Dr. Sork will now devote his time to international initiatives across the Faculty of Education. Within this portfolio, Dr. Sork will also continue to be responsible for the initiatives and activities of the Professional Development and Community Engagement (PDCE) unit. His appointment continues through June 30, 2016.

The Intergenerational Landed Learning Project (ILLP) was the recipient of a 2013 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Science Promotion Award. Dr. Frank attended the award event held June 12 at the Edith Cavell Elementary School in Vancouver to celebrate this achievement.

Award Ceremony for Dr. Jean Barman, Professor Emerita, Department of Educational Studies

On June 19, the Dean attended an award ceremony at the Vancouver Public Library, where Dr. Jean Barman was awarded the George Woodcock Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to Canadian scholarship and literature.

After the presentation of her award, Dr. Barman read from her latest work, French Canadians, Furs, and Indigenous Women in the Making of the Pacific Northwest.

African Storybook Summit

The African Storybook Summit, held at UBC on June 26, was an extension of a Peter Wall Colloquium Abroad held in October 2013. It was co-organized by the projects’ research advisor, Dr. Bonny Norton, Professor in the Department of Language and Literacy (LLED), and Project Director Tessa Welch at the South African Institute for Distance Education (Saide).

Opened by President Stephen Toope and Dean Blye Frank, the summit succeeded in harnessing both local and international support for the African Storybook Project, strengthening existing networks and forging new ones.

Summit participants included UBC faculty and students, the project’s literacy advisor, Judith Baker, as well as members of the international development community such as Worldreader, Room to Read, Translators Without Borders, CODE, and Grace Rwanda.

National Taiwan Normal University Visit

Dean Frank and Dr. Tom Sork, Senior Associate Dean, International, hosted a visit by a senior leadership team from the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) on June 25. The delegates included: Professor Cheng-chih Wu, Vice President, Academic & International Affairs; Professor Frank Ying, Dean, Office of International Affairs; and Ms. Aprille Wan, Regional Program Manager, Office of International Affairs.

Noted Summer Scholar Lecture, Dr. Bryan McKinley Jones Brayboy

On July 8, as part of the Noted Summer Scholar Lecture series, Dean Frank attended the lecture, Looking into the Hearts of Native Peoples: Nation Building as an Institutional Orientation for Graduate Education, by Dr. Bryan McKinley Jones Brayboy.

Dr. McKinley Jones Brayboy is a citizen of the Lumbee Nation. He is President’s Professor, Borderlands Professor of Indigenous Education and Justice, and Director of the Centre for Indian Education at Arizona State University. His research focuses on the experiences of Indigenous students, staff, and faculty in institutions of higher education. More recently he has been engaged in scholarship that seek to explore the role of Indigenous Knowledge Systems in educational research and its methodologies.

Year of Teacher Education BBQ and Closing Event

The closing celebration for the Year of Teacher Education (YTE) was held on July 16. Dean Frank attended a BBQ event on Main Mall in front of the Neville Scarfe Building, followed by the opening of a photo exhibit legacy project for YTE. The exhibit honours cohorts of teacher candidates and their teaching specializations, and is located on the second floor of Scarfe in the lecture block.

Annual Meeting with the Royal Canadian Legion BC & Yukon Command

The Faculty of Education held its annual meeting with the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) BC & Yukon Command on July 17, where Dean Frank and Dr. Marv Westwood, Professor, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS) and Royal Canadian Legion Professorship in Group Counselling and Trauma, shared the impact of the RCL million dollar commitment to the Professorship.

Meeting with Noted Scholar, Dr. Angel Lin

On July 21, Dean Frank met with Dr. Angel Lin regarding her Noted Summer Scholar Lecture, Towards Paradigmatic Change in TESOL Methodologies: Building Plurilingual Pedagogies from the Ground Up.

Dr. Lin is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong. She is well respected for her interdisciplinary research in classroom discourse analysis, bilingual education, language policy in postcolonial contexts, and critical cultural studies. She has published over 90 research articles and co-/authored/edited 6 research books.

Luncheon with Representatives from the Lando Family

The Dean hosted the Lando family at the Sage Bistro on July 29, to thank them for their generous support through the Edith Lando Charitable Foundation. Dr. Shelley Hymel, Professor, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS) and Edith Lando Professorship in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), updated the Lando Family on the status of the Professorship and SEL online resources.

Created in 2011, the Edith Lando Professorship in Social and Emotional Learning has been established to support research in the social-emotional learning of young people.

Noted Summer Scholar Lecture, Dr. Zhang Hua

Dr. Frank attended Dr. Zhang Hua’s Noted Summer Scholar Lecture, Towards a Research-based Pedagogy, on August 5.

Dr. Zhang Hua is Professor and Dean of Graduate School of Educational Studies at Hangzhou Normal University; former President of International Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies (IAACS); the main expert for National Curriculum Reform in China; and Fulbright Scholar at Harvard Graduate School of Education. His research interests include curriculum studies, curriculum history, wisdom traditions (Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism), curriculum reform, pedagogy, and teacher education. He has published 9 books and more than 130 papers in academic journals.

Dean Frank attended Professor Toope’s farewell event on June 14, held at the Norman MacKenzie House.

Dinner at Dr. Gordon Smith’s Residence

Dean Frank, Dr. Rita Irwin, Associate Dean, Teacher Education, and Zoe Campbell, Director of Development and Alumni Engagement, attended a private dinner hosted by Dr. Gordon Smith at his residence on June 16. The Faculty representatives had the opportunity to update Dr. Smith on some of the current activities of the Faculty. Other guests in attendance were Dr. Dan and Mrs. Arlene Birch, Gabriele (BA ’83) and Brian Ailey (MA ’89), and artist Gary Kennedy.

The Dean joined Professor Toope and Dr. David Farrar at a reception for Dr. Anna Kindler, in honour of her many years of service to the University as the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President Academic. The reception was held at the First Nations Longhouse on June 17.

Dean Frank joined Dr. David Farrar and Professor Toope for a reception at the Sage Bistro on June 19, to thank Dr. Murray Isman for his years of service to the University as the Dean of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems.
