Update on Faculty Searches
The Faculty of Education is currently undergoing searches for two positions:

Head, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS)

Dean Frank and the Advisory Committee for the next ECPS Department Head welcomed two candidates for interviews in January:

  • Dr. Brent Mallinckrodt, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the University of Tennessee,met with members of the Faculty and Department on January 12-13.
  • Dr. Kurt Geisinger, Director of the Buros Center for Testing and Meierhenry Distinguished University Professor at the University of Nebraska, met with members of the Faculty and Department on January 19-20.

Director, School of Kinesiology (KIN)

The recommendation of the Dean and Advisory Committee has been approved by the Provost. Conversations with the candidate look hopeful.

Update on External Reviews
The Faculty of Education is in the process of conducting academic reviews of three departments and the School of Kinesiology per the Senate Policy on Reviews of Administrative Units and Board of Governors Policy 22.

The purpose of the academic review is: to assess the strength and balance of the Departments’/School’s teaching, scholarly and professional activities, academic programs and service; evaluate the School/Department’s leadership and administration, its standing nationally and internationally; and advise on the future development of the Departments/School.

Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED)

The Dean met with the Department Head, Associate Deans, Dean & VP Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, VP Academic Affairs, staff, faculty, and students on September 16-18. The academic review of has now been completed and the forwarded to the Provost’s Office.

Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP)

The academic review of EDCP was held November 3-5. The report from external reviewers has been received, and the Department is working on a moving forward plan.

School of Kinesiology (KIN)

External reviewers conducted their academic review of KIN on November 24-26. Their report is pending.

Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology, & Special Education (ECPS)

External reviewers will conduct their review of ECPS on February 4-6.

Appointment Announcements Affiliated with the Office of the Dean

Deanna Kayne, Manager of Alumni Engagement

As Manager of Alumni Engagement, Deanna is responsible for engaging Faculty of Education alumni through local, national, and global alumni events and communications, building connections with University-wide alumni initiatives, and coordinating the Faculty’s Alumni Award nominations and recognition. Deanna joined the Development and Alumni Engagement team on November 27.

Ayaz Mahmood, Finance Manager

Ayaz Mahmood manages the Faculty of Education’s Finance Office, and is responsible for budgets/Hyperion, payables audit, and query resolution. Ayaz previously held the position of Administrative Coordinator in the School of Kinesiology, and joined the Finance team fulltime as Finance Manager on January 5.

Ponderosa Commons Phase 2 “Topping Off”
On December 12, Dean Blye Frank, along with Dr. Tom Sork, Senior Associate Dean International, Tracy Wyman, Project Director, Zoe Campbell, Director of Development & Alumni Engagement, and Dr. Michelle Stack, Deputy Head and Associate Professor, Department of Educational Studies, donned hard hats and steel-toed boots to visit the Ponderosa Commons Phase Two construction site for a “topping off.” The group traveled to the tower’s roof top, where Dean Frank participated in a ceremonial pour of concrete along with Andrew Parr, Managing Director, Student Housing and Hospitality Services (SHHS), members of the SHHS team, and representatives from Urban One Builders.

Cancer’s Margins Digital Storytelling Group Premiere
On December 9, Dr. Frank gave welcoming remarks at the world premiere of the Cancer’s Margins Digital Storytelling Group, Filmmakers in Attendance Screening and Celebration. As each of the nine Cancer’s Margins digital stories were viewed, the story author gave a few words on what making their story meant to them.
NITEP Alumni Event
Following the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) Conference on December 5, the Dean joined Dr. Jo-ann Archibald at a gathering of NITEP alumni. Dr. Archibald provided an update on what’s happening in NITEP, and alumni shared their own updates, followed by general mingling and celebration of NITEP’s 40th anniversary.
In the House with Kate Hammett-Vaughan
Dean Frank was pleased to host a full house of Faculty of Education alumni and friends on December 3 at Cecil Green Park House, featuring an incredible performance by jazz vocalist Kate Hammett-Vaughan.

Fall Congregation
Dean Frank and Faculty of Education faculty members joined the Congregation procession at the Chan Centre, where over 720 students graduated on November 28. Student speaker Carolyn Roberts, BEd’14 PLTech, gave a moving speech that brought the audience to their feet in a standing ovation.
Bachelor of Education Student Awards Night
The 2013/14 Teacher Education program award recipients were honoured at the Bachelor of Education Student Awards Night held on November 27. The Dean was pleased to take part in the awards ceremony, and earlier in the evening hosted a Donor Appreciation Dinner to acknowledge the generosity of the award donors.

Phi Delta Kappa Panel
Dean Frank joined fellow panelists Chris Kennedy, Superintendent of West Vancouver Schools, and Kit Krieger, Executive Director of the BC Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association, for a mediated discussion of, “Building Community in a Time of Change,” at a gathering of the UBC Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa at the Arbutus Club on November 26.
UBC Alumni Achievement Awards
Dean Frank attended the 2014 alumni UBC Achievement Awards held on November 19 at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver, where Faculty of Education alumni, Dr. Videsh Kapoor, BEd 92, MD 93, received the Global Citizenship Award.

Faculty Meeting
Dean Frank was pleased to welcome UBC’s 13th President and Vice-Chancellor Arvind Gupta to the November 18 Faculty Meeting held at the First Nations Longhouse. Professor Gupta spoke on innovation and education, and then offered a question and answer period.
Trip to Shanghai, China
During the week of November 8 – 15, Dr. Frank travelled to Shanghai, China at the invitation of Dean Zhang Hua at the Hangzhou Normal University (HNU), who graciously offered to cover all travel costs associated with the trip. The purpose of the trip was to build and strengthen collaborative relationships between UBC and HNU. The Dean also visited East China Normal University (ECNU), where he met with Dean Yuan Zhenguo.

While in Shanghai, Dean Frank joined Dr. William Pinar, Professor and Canada Research Chair, Department of Curriculum & Pedagogy, at the International Forum on Life-Inquiry Curriculum Conference, where Dr. Pinar was a keynote speaker.

Faculty Conversations
On November 5, the Dean and faculty members gathered in the 4th floor lounge for one in a series of, “Faculty Conversations.” Topics of discussion for this session included: what makes for a superior Faculty; how to ensure the success of newly appointed faculty members; how to ensure the work of our faculty remains relevant to the concerns of the community; how to showcase the best ideas generated by our scholars.
Dalai Lama visits John Oliver Secondary
Dr. Frank was honoured to be among the 1400 students, educators and parents present when the 14th Dalai Lama visited John Oliver Secondary School on the first day of his three-day visit to Vancouver, October 21. The Dalai Lama was joined on stage by five students from around the province who had the rare opportunity to speak one-on-one with the spiritual leader. Following the visit, the Dalai Lama spent the day at his Heart-Mind Summit at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
Visitors from the National Academy of Education Administration (NAEA)
On October 20, Dean Frank was pleased to join Dr. Tom Sork, Senior Associate Dean, International, Dr. Ross Paul, Adjunct Professor, Department of Educational Studies, and Mr. Shapoor Marfatia, Director, Business Development, Professional Development & Community Engagement (PDCE), in welcoming representatives from the National Academy of Education Administration (NAEA), Beijing, China, who were here to discuss the overseas study program for Chinese University Leaders supported by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration for Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA).
Meeting with Deputy Minister Dave Byng
On October 17, Dr. Frank joined members of the Association of British Columbia Deans of Education (ABCDE) at a meeting with Deputy Minister Dave Byng in Victoria, BC. The purpose of the meeting was to meet and introduce Deputy Minister Byng to ABCDE and its role as an education partner group, and to open and maintain channels of communication on topics of mutual interest.
NITEP Duncan Field Centre Visit and Alumni Social
On October 15, Dean Frank accompanied Jessica La Rochelle, Assistant Director NITEP, on a visit to the Duncan NITEP Field Centre. Following the visit, the Dean hosted a gathering for Faculty of Education alumni at Vancouver Island University in Duncan, BC.

NITEP Kamloops Field Centre Visit and Alumni Social
On October 10, Dean Frank accompanied Jessica La Rochelle, Assistant Director NITEP, on a visit to the Kamloops NITEP Field Centre. Following the visit, Dean Frank and 2014 Alumni Teacher Award Co-Winner, Cheryl Sebastian, co-hosted a Faculty of Education alumni lunch at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC.

President Gupta Address at the Vancouver Board of Trade Luncheon
Dean Frank, Dr. Pam Ratner, Sr. Associate Dean Administration & Innovation, Zoë Campbell, Director, Development & Alumni Engagement, and Peggy MacDonald, Development Officer, attended the October 1 Vancouver Board of Trade (VBOT) luncheon, where Professor Arvind Gupta made his first presentation to the VTOB since becoming UBC President and Vice-Chancellor, presenting his vision for how BC benefits when UBC and the business community work together to enhance the province’s social, cultural, and economic future.
